MIFA’s Something Good in Memphis campaign is designed to celebrate those who make Memphis better, whether it’s the stranger who helps change your flat tire in the rain or a human services pioneer who changes the lives of a hundred poor Memphians. Sometimes people tend to focus on the bad and forget the good, but we see reminders of the good in Memphis every day!

 

Nominating is quick and easy – just fill out our simple form! Nominate friends, neighbors,and colleagues whose daily efforts or remarkable deeds embody the spirit of positive action in our community.Thank you for being a part of the good in Memphis!

Daschunna Mallory walks for ALS

Since her mother died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease), Daschunna Mallory has been an advocate, fundraiser, and participant in Memphis' annual ALS walk. Christian Kauffman and Cort Gatliff are biking for clean water

Christian Kauffman and Cort Gatliff are doing something special this spring.  These two MUS students are on day 21 of a cross-country bike ride to raise money for Living Water.  The money raised by this project will go towards building wells in Haiti to help bring clean water to those that don't have it.  Follow their journey on their blog ( link ). Amber Reed is a student making a difference

Amber Reed is Something Good in Memphis. "As only an 8th grader at FACS, Amber is out trying to work hard for the community and especially the elderly by working on creating an Adopt a Senior program. In just weeks she has put together Project: Valentine Cards, where elementary students make cards that will be delivered to area nursing homes, established a pen pal at a nursing home in Batesville, MS, and hopes to create a program that other teenagers will want to be involved in." Raye Osborne is a true servant leader

Raye Osborne is making a difference in the lives of children affected by HIV/AIDS. Raye is an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at Hope House, an organization that works with children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Raye has been instrumental in creating a new volunteer program for the organization. Dorothy Howard is so dedicated and caring

Dorothy Howard works as a home health aide at Caring Companions. Dorothy vowed to one of her clients that she would never let his wife go to a nursing home. He passed away, and it would have been financially impossible for the wife to remain at home with 24 hour care. Dorothy kept to her promise and remained with the client's wife without getting paid. Larry Holtermann is a generous dad!

Larry is my pops and he's Something Good in Memphis because he puts up with me, even when I'm annoying or expensive. I recently had back surgery, & for three weeks, he stayed up with me every night while I was limited to the couch, made or brought me dinner every night, and even took me to have my hair washed when I was unable to bend over the sink to do so myself. Volunteers at Wings make a difference!

Wings Cancer Foundation volunteers are cancer survivors, caregivers, and friends who strive to make a difference in someone's life touched by cancer. By giving practical assistance in the treatment rooms, visiting hospitalized patients, creating caps and prayer shawls, providing nutritious snacks, and educating the community on cancer awareness and prevention, these volunteers are tangible evidence of hope, education, and support. Jacob works incredibly hard as the Director of the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center. Another anonymous good deed

One of my friends accidentally dropped a their check card at a gas station. The good Memphis Samaritan who picked it up called the bank right away to let them know it was lost. Saved my friend a lot of grief and worry. Way to go Memphians! Nominated by Bevin Baddorf.

Autumn Chastain works for Memphis' youth

Autumn spends countless hours at Juvenile Court helping and representing some of the people who need it most - Memphis' youth. Away from court, she takes time with the families and the kids to show that she cares - and she shows them that there are others who care, too. Ryan Steed stopped when no one else did

Ryan Steed stopped to call 911 after seeing a man punching a woman who was pinned on the ground on the side of the road downtown early Saturday morning. He stopped the car and tried to cross a busy street, knife in hand, ready to restrain the attacker, right as police arrived. It turned out that the man was not punching the woman, but stabbing her, and paramedics were able to stabilize her before taking her to the hospital. The nice girl at Starbucks is Something Good!

This anonymous stranger is Something Good in Memphis.  When I went to Starbucks after church, I got to the front of the line, when I realized I left my wallet in the car.  The nice girl behind me in line offered to pay for my coffee to keep me from having to run out to my car in the rain.  This total random act of goodness is exactly what Something Good in Memphis is all about! Joseph Jaffe is a hero, who serves and protects

Joseph Jaffe is Something Good in Memphis and DeSoto County. He is a dedicated reserve officer for DeSoto County's Sheriff's Department for the last several years, helping keep our community safe. He is always willing to help someone who is in a bind. A couple months ago, he stopped on the side of Interstate 240 to help a woman whose car engine caught on fire.
